Xpedeo offers a multimedia tour in which the exhibits are placed in a critical and multifaceted historical context.

2010
The German Tank Museum Munster is a joint institution of the town of Munster and the Bundeswehr's Munster Training Centre, the central training centre for junior officers and non-commissioned officers of the armoured combat troops, army reconnaissance troops and army air defence troops of the Bundeswehr.

The museum's mission is to document the history of German armoured troops since 1917. The core of the exhibition consists of around 40 tanks from the Bundeswehr and NVA as well as 40 tanks and other vehicles from the German Wehrmacht. There are also tanks from the Red Army, British Army and United States Army from the Second World War.

Since it was founded in 1983, the museum has had over 1.8 million visitors, around 70,000 a year. This makes the museum one of the most visited leisure facilities in Lüneburg Heath and one of only 5% of German museums with over 50,000 visitors per year.

Task

The Tank Museum had set itself the goal of offering its visitors a completely new service: a multimedia tour through the exhibition, in which the exhibits are placed in a critical and multifaceted historical context.

At over 20 stations in the museum, interesting and interesting facts about the history of the tanks were to be told via headphones and accompanied by historical images. One of the museum management's special requests was to have the German dubbing actor of Jean Luc Picard, Ernst Meincke, as the voice for the audio tour. In addition to being multilingual (German and English), it was also important to the Armoured Museum that the visitor guidance system was designed to be simple enough for visitors of all ages to use the multimedia guide.

When selecting the multimedia guide, it was also crucial to ensure that the content could be expanded so that additional languages and themed tours could be added in the future.

Realisation

When implementing the xpedeo system in the form of the multimedia guide, we created a clear and detailed exhibition plan for easy navigation. Depending on their wishes, visitors can choose a guided tour, i.e. a predetermined route, or explore the museum individually.

The combination of original armour and detailed information in the form of spoken text and historical images on technical details, background information and anecdotes suddenly brings history to life and makes it an intense experience. The calm and powerful voice of Jean Luc Picard emphasises the poignant mood of the tour and at the same time gives the sometimes very emotional topic the necessary objectivity.

In addition to the German multimedia guide tour, an English version has also been realised. Further themed tours are also being planned, which can be quickly and easily added to the xpedeo multimedia guide with the help of the additor editing system.

Customer judgement

"The German Armoured Museum Munster (DPM) has achieved an enormous qualitative and quantitative improvement in the area of knowledge transfer thanks to the xpedeo system. A museum that thematises such a problematic field must place a particularly high value on this area. The xpedeo system now enables every visitor to receive a critical and multifaceted contextualisation of the exhibits. In the past, this was only possible through guided tours, which are naturally time-bound and must remain limited in terms of quantity. The xpedeo system overcomes these limitations.

At the same time, the multimedia guide format means that the learning process is not perceived as dry or school-like. On the contrary, the device generates a certain entertainment value, so that the "feel-good factor" of the museum visit is also increased. The combination of these two aspects means that in an initial evaluation of the guides, 92% of visitors gave a positive rating, a third of which were very positive.

Thanks to the support of the InformationsGesellschaft, the technical side is not an obstacle even for complete novices and therefore no longer a reason not to tackle multimedia guides. In future, the DPM will use the simple expansion and/or replacement of content to expand the guides and keep them up to date."

"The multimedia guide not only provides spoken texts, but also images and sounds. In interactive animations, museum visitors can, for example, open and close the barefoot altar to their heart's content
. [...] The device creates a completely new relationship between image and likeness, between original exhibit and digital reproduction."
